Deki Reader v200:

Test & Track Infectious Disease at Scale

Cloud Connected device testing for Malaria, Dengue Fever, HIV and more.

The Fio v200 Deki Reader is a portable, battery-powered diagnostic test platform for use both in laboratories and in challenging field environments such as in developing nations. It is used to test for infectious diseases at a local level, allowing testing to be performed by lightly and rapidly trained personnel, while ensuring the utmost quality and adherence to standards. The v200 system walks clinicians through the testing process, step-by-step, ensuring test results are reliable and repeatable, at scale. Cloud Upload & Analysis: Data is anonymized (per the most stringent international health privacy standards) and large datasets are collected and analyzed for region- and country-scale disease tracking.

Industrial Design & Development

Led & personally executed the industrial design of this project.

Tools: Hand sketch, Rhino, Solidworks, Keyshot, Physical prototypes of all sorts.

Team = Me.

Mech Design & Engineering

Owned & executed all physical design, e.g. Manufacturability (DFM), Assembly (DFA), Quality (DFQ). Created all components, inc. final detailed toleranced drawings and tool-ready (e.g. draft-angled) CAD outputs.

Team = Me + 1 Jr. Assistant.

Production

Commissioning

Owned Mech FMEA/PFMEA process.

Extensive in-person, hands-on presence at factories in Asia and N.America to deliver the device. Injection-mold toolers, molders, electronics (PCB/PCBA), assembly.

Mechanical Test

Developed all mech test plans, such as drop, shock, vibration, chemical compatibility, water & dust, etc. Responsible for execution & traceability.

Outsourced/Insourced to ISO:13485 device development standards.

Team: Me + 1 Jr. Assistant.

Last-Mile Activities

Owned gap-filling roles to bring product "over the finish line", such as design, development and deployment of product accessory kits & innovative packaging system.

Deki Reader v200:

Testing for Infectious Disease at Scale

Rugged, in vitro diagnostic device for use with commercially available lateral flow immunoassays (rapid diagnostic tests). It provides step-by-step guidance for performing rapid diagnostic tests as well as an objective analysis of results.

Local healthcare workers in low-resource developing-world settings often face challenges testing large numbers of blood samples for malaria, Ebola, HIV, and other diseases without widespread access to clean laboratory environments. Powered by advanced machine vision, the v200 tackles these challenges by providing healthcare workers with the tools they need to track, report and combat the spread of  high-impact infectious disease.
